Player Stacy Mathis--Goree Wilcats & Roaring Springs Yellowjackets
Stacy Mathis played his freshman football at Roaring Springs and his junior and senior years at Goree, both were six-man football schools.  His father was a Baptist minister and moved his family from Roaring Springs, TX  to Goree, TX  after his freshman football season.  Due to the Interscholastic League's rules at the time, a student was not allowed to participate in any sport for one year after transferrring to another school.  Because of the rule, he had to miss his sophomore football season.  In his junior and senior years at Goree, he was the team's leading rusher and receiver.  In his senior year, he scored 240 of the team's 440 points and accounted for over 2,000 all-purpose yards.  He also led the team in tackles from his linebacker position.  Goree was second to Weinert in district for the two years. (Weinert won the Regional championship, which was the highest level that a Six-Man Team could achieveat the time.)  Goree lost close, competitive games to Weinert both his junior and senior years.  He was on the All District team both years.  As a freshman at Roaring Springs, he was a first team starter as a running back.  Following his senior season, he was offered and accepted a full athletic scholarship to Baylor University.  He was a starter for the 1963 Baylor team that lost only one Southwest Conference game to the University of Texas by
a 7 to 0 score.  (Texas was the eventual National Champion that season)  After completing his college football career and graduating from Baylor, he signed a contract to play professional football with the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.  (He also had an offer to sign with the Houston Oilers as a free agent.)
